The popular Pudgy Penguins NFT collection is set to dive into the metaverse with its upcoming game, Pudgy World, anticipated to debut in alpha in 2024.
The Ethereum-based NFT collection, Pudgy Penguins, first released in July 2021, is gearing up to enhance its digital empire with an immersive 3D browser game named Pudgy World. Announced with a captivating trailer at Art Basel in Miami, the game is expected to enter the alpha phase in 2024.
Pudgy Penguins has experienced a remarkable journey, overcoming past controversies with its original owner, leading to a management overhaul. Under new leadership, the brand has formed an executive advisory board, secured $9 million in funding, and made its mark in the retail sector with plush penguin toys at over 2,000 Walmart and Hot Topic stores in the U.S. Additionally, the brand's engaging content has amassed millions of views across various social media platforms.
Pudgy World invites players to step into a virtual world where they can adopt a 3D avatar representing their Pudgy Penguin NFTs or plush toy counterparts. The game, which will be accessible for free, allows gamers to personalize their characters and engage in a narrative-driven experience.
Central to the game's plot are two characters, Pudgy and Peaches, who will lead players through a series of yet-to-be-disclosed adventures. “The alpha launch of Pudgy World is a massive step forward for the Web3 and NFT space because Pudgy Penguin owners will be playing with their Pudgy Toys, without any pre-existing knowledge of the blockchain technology it is built on,” stated Pudgy Penguins CEO Luca Netz.
Pudgy World's technological backbone is powered by Matter Labs’ Ethereum layer-2 scaling protocol, zkSync. This technology, known for its zero-knowledge (ZK) blockchain capabilities, enhances user privacy compared to traditional transactions on public networks like Ethereum.
While details on the specific application of zkSync in Pudgy World remain under wraps, Michael Lee, SVP of Growth at Matter Labs, shared his enthusiasm for the project. He believes the incorporation of ZK technology will “unlock new business models and gaming experiences” for the Pudgy World community. As Pudgy Penguins continues to evolve, this venture into the metaverse signals an exciting new chapter for the NFT world and its enthusiasts.
